  1. The Morning After

December 26, 2012 by the Sleep Walker

    Happy day after Christmas!

This is but a short post letting you know my plans for today, a wonderful morning after. After she gave me the most creative and sweetest card (with big hearts, big flowers and repeatedly kissing me as she gave it to me) my girl deserves a girls day out.

  2. His and Hers Gifts

December 19, 2012 by the Sleep Walker

    "His and hers hiking sticks"

It seems like I no longer exist to my mother, all she ever talks about is le boyfriend. Even when making up her holiday gifts list at the very top was my niece James, the boyfriend and everybody else with my name tacked on next the boyfriend’s. If I didn’t already have two brothers I would be convinced that she missed the presence of a son figure.

  3. Naughty or Nice

December 5, 2012 by the Sleep Walker

Receiving naughty bedroom gifts from my closest girlfriends (and my mother) is one of my darkest secret nightmares. I suspect it’s also the reason I have successfully avoided the alter and the obligatory kitchen tea/ hen party, much to my mother’s vocal disdain.

  4. Thinking About The Life of Working Mothers

November 28, 2012 by the Sleep Walker

Lately I’ve been fascinated by the world of mothers. Not just any mothers, rather those who are like myself (work and have career aspirations.) I’ve also tried to convince myself that this interest has been a generic process and not one fueled by my mother and my biological clock, which has been ticking so loudly the last five years I’m certain it’s about to go off at any random moment.

  5. Working New Mommy Blues

November 7, 2012 by the Sleep Walker

My niece James’ mother has recently started a day job as she is saving up to go back to school next semester, culinary school to be exact. When she starts her classes she’s hoping to keep the job on a part-time — she’s a graphic designer, and can do freelance projects after hours — basis. This had me thinking about what all the other mothers who work and study have to think about.

  6. Dress Code For Interns

October 24, 2012 by the Sleep Walker

I am starting to feel like a self-appointed fairy godmother to all the Born Frees about to get into working environments. Yesterday I was reading one of those quirky pieces of writing about being 20-something in this century. The author made a list of 10 things his/her fellow 20-somethings could be for halloween. One of the listed items was “intern” and the author said something about a simple button down shirt, black pants, pumps and a confused look.

  7. Snow day

This women’s week has gotten to a bit of a historic start, what with the events of yesterday. This is a post about the weather, yes. For weeks now I’d begun to wonder if my (sometimes) mornings off had got as exciting as they ever will. There are only so many manicures I can get. And I fear it’s only a matter of time before my “I’ll just tighten the presentation up” becomes a full blown working session. Yesterday’s morning off, however,  was brilliant!

  8. Getting used to the good stuff

July 11, 2012 by the Sleep Walker

I had never thought  about what kind of a princess or general royal I would make because, well the chances of me being a distant relative of a Maharajah were very slim. My father might have disagreed because he always insisted we were royals (only in his heart.) But I know now what kind of royal I would be, the kind that relishes being spoilt and pampered.

  9. DIY: Happiness

June 13, 2012 by the Sleep Walker

Winter has the ability to bring me down. This has been one of those weeks; it’s too cold, deadline upon deadline and too many microwave dinners in front of my Mac. I haven’t been out with my friends for a drink and a laugh in two weeks; mainly because we’re all so busy but particularly because it’s so cold out. Deadlines and cabin fever are not a good look on me, but I have my trusted DIY tools that lift my mood.

  10. Had my mother written me an open letter about life

May 9, 2012 by the Sleep Walker

For the longest time my mother was the only woman I knew and trusted. She is my hero and everything I know and love about  womanhood I learned (and am still learning from her.) From knowing her, loving her and sometimes being infuriated by her I have learnt lessons about womanhood and parenthood. This is the  open love letter and guide to life that my mother  has written to me — without realising it.*
