  1. His and Hers Gifts

December 19, 2012 by the Sleep Walker

    "His and hers hiking sticks"

It seems like I no longer exist to my mother, all she ever talks about is le boyfriend. Even when making up her holiday gifts list at the very top was my niece James, the boyfriend and everybody else with my name tacked on next the boyfriend’s. If I didn’t already have two brothers I would be convinced that she missed the presence of a son figure.

  2. Tooth fairy economics

December 4, 2012 by the Sleep Walker

    Childhood memories…

When I was young my mother and ma Zane told me that the tooth fairy was the best magical children’s fairy person there was and I had no problem believing them because anyone willing to pay me money for my teeth was the best in my eyes. I vowed to continue the tooth fairy tradition when i had my own children.

  3. Thinking About The Life of Working Mothers

November 28, 2012 by the Sleep Walker

Lately I’ve been fascinated by the world of mothers. Not just any mothers, rather those who are like myself (work and have career aspirations.) I’ve also tried to convince myself that this interest has been a generic process and not one fueled by my mother and my biological clock, which has been ticking so loudly the last five years I’m certain it’s about to go off at any random moment.

  4. My Thought This Universal Children’s Day

November 20, 2012 by the Sleep Walker

Today is Universal Children’s day. A day all the parents in the world recognise how lucky they are that their children chose them for parents — not that we ever forget. The day all parents critically look at children’s issues, what they can do to help and put an end to hunger, child labour, child trafficking, child-headed homes.

  5. When it’s Time to Have the Talk

September 25, 2012 by the Sleep Walker

    Hi friends,

This past weekend my youngest went on a girl and boy play date. It wasn’t a date (he’s far too young for that) and I’m hoping that it’s going to be about three more years before he goes on an actual date. It was just a movie with his favourite friend from soccer, who is a girl. Hubby and I decided to have the kindness talk, he is two years younger than my oldest son was when we had it with him.

  6. A Little Inspiration Sprinkled With Love

September 18, 2012 by the Sleep Walker

My day was recently brightened when my daughter emailed me a few pictures from her Pinterest account. She has started exploring her interest in photography and I thought that’s all the account was for, to find and store inspiration. The particular images she sent to me were from her “Pins For Mum” board. It always warms my heart when I’m confronted with what thoughtful people my children are and knowing that I have a bit of an influence in the kind of people they become makes me happy.

  7. Spring/Summer Bedroom Essentials

August 21, 2012 by the Sleep Walker

For the last couple of days we’ve had 25-degree weather. Sunshine and late sunsets. It’s really starting to feel a bit like winter is leaving this town. My daughter is the only person in my house whose bedroom has been waiting for this season.

  8. Getting used to the good stuff

July 11, 2012 by the Sleep Walker

I had never thought  about what kind of a princess or general royal I would make because, well the chances of me being a distant relative of a Maharajah were very slim. My father might have disagreed because he always insisted we were royals (only in his heart.) But I know now what kind of royal I would be, the kind that relishes being spoilt and pampered.

  9. Emotional Intelligence in Children

July 3, 2012 by the Sleep Walker

Last week my son had a new friend from soccer over to the house and after playing out in the yard they came in for a snack. It turns out their budding relationship is built on the fact that they are the only two in their school group who bring a peanut butter and jam sandwich for lunch at least once a week. I watched them negotiate over the last sandwich and it took a lot for me to not give him a side eye that said “he’s a guest! Let him have the last piece.”

  10. Children will give you grey hairs

June 19, 2012 by the Sleep Walker

    Youthful and fashionable greys

Sometime ago when the second term of this school year began my youngest came to me with his homework and asked: “Ma, what causes grey hair?” My fingers instinctively combed through my tresses and I responded “I don’t know, we’ll phone grandma and ask.” The finger comb was not as instinctive  as it was self conscious. In the last few years I have  gradually found a couple of grey hairs, which I think are more of a genetic premature greying problem. At the end of the chat with my mother and a short Google search he settled on the answer that grey hairs are both genetics and stress related.
