  1. It’s Earth Day!

April 22, 2013 by the Sleep Walker

    Hello friends!

It’s the 22nd of April, which means it’s been a year since the last Earth day. It’s probably too late in the day to do big projects to commemorate but if you have any in mind save them for tomorrow or the weekend because Earth day is everyday. We should always be grateful to the Earth and replenish the environment whenever we can. Here are some projects you can still do today to celebrate Earth day and be planet earth friendly.

  2. Managing Your E-Waste

April 8, 2013 by the Sleep Walker

The growth in technology of the last couple of decades has meant a great deal of progress and moving forward. Technological advancements have helped big multi-national, multi-billion dollar corporations run as nearly completely paperless entities; technology has shrunk the world into a tiny global village and has made most of us global citizens. With the ever-changing and developing world of technology comes a downside.

  3. When Earth Hour is Over

March 25, 2013 by the Sleep Walker

Saturday, as we all know, was Earth Hour day. The lovely Pop Princess penned a little post on that  with a few ideas on what people could do between 8:30PM and 9:30PM while their lights were off. Not only did I enjoy the post but I also found it quite useful, which got me thinking about environment conservation and green efforts in general.

  4. The New Rainbow Warrior in South Africa

August 13, 2012 by the Sleep Walker

Greenpeace Africa is the direct offshoot of a movement that began in 1971 with a group of people outraged by the US government’s intention to do nuclear testing at Amchitka, a tiny island off Alaska.

Today, that outrage is focussed on the cradle of humankind: Africa. We are actively working in South Africa, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Senegal; the countries with the most urgent environmental issues – climate changeover-fishing and the destruction of the all-important rainforests- issues that affect the entire continent

  5. Urban foraging

August 6, 2012 by the Sleep Walker

I grew up in a semi-rural area where we played in open green fields, splashed in river water and sat around a large fire with the neighbours. I was a bit young to perform the tasks my older cousins did, like fetching wood and water.  But  had a special task that my grandmother and I did together, just the two of us. Every second Friday (the lower primary school let out just after lunch) we would take a long walk to the near forests and pick wild spinach for that night’s supper and the next morning’s breakfast.

  6. Upgrade the Status of Your Glass

July 30, 2012 by the Sleep Walker

Glass is one of the easiest items to recycle. It also takes a considerably less time to that most waste to break down. I advocate recycling above everything but reusing is a big part of the three Rs. It also takes much less energy that the process of recycling. I think the hip and the young (er) also call it upcycling.

  7. Recycling by the Numbers

July 9, 2012 by the Sleep Walker

It feels like the environmentally conscious choir has been singing the Three Rs song for so long people have become immune to (if not bored by) it. Some people (friends of mine) have even gone as far as to say, the whole world knows about recycling, that a lot of people are doing it and that nobody was missing their contributions. In case you are feeling that way I have put together some facts and figures, which I hope will encourage you to do your part. Numbers that I hope will help you realise that we need you to play your part.

  8. How-to: Save Petrol

April 4, 2012 by the Sleep Walker

Earlier this morning the price of fuel was increase again by more than 70 cents. This means we have to tighten our belts even more as we all know that an increase in fuel prices means an increase in just about everything. As the good friend that I am I went looking around for tips to help us all save petrol and maybe we won’t feel the pinch of the increase as much.  I hope.

  9. It’s the Season to Give, Let’s give Back to the Environment

December 12, 2011 by the Sleep Walker

I was asked to give a presentation on what people can do to have an eco-friendly festive season (Day of Reconciliation, Christmas day, New Year’s Eve day and New Years day) at one of the corporate companies I work with; this over and above the DOs and DONTs for the company itself. It pleases me to see people who are interested in and are willing to do their bit to conserve the environment. Like I’ve said many times before, people do want to help; they do want to keep their environmental impact to the bare minimum without living like communal hippies. The number one issue people have come up to me and cited as the reason they have not started living better and planet Earth considerate lives is that all they ever her is: “Oh it’s easy, you’ve just got to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle” but no one ever really tells them how all this is done. Nobody until now, that is.
