Happy New Year!
I hope you had a great festive season and that you are recovering from it beautifully. I also hope that all your application forms were in last year already and, if you are going into the job market, your CV has made its way to every important HR manager’s desk already. What I know for a fact is that all of your New Year’s resolutions have been written, they are tucked into your journals, programmed into your smartphones and some are plastered behind your doors. Over my summer of blogtrotting (in between strolls on the beach and dancing ‘till sunrise by a bonfire) I found that a lot of bloggers are writing a list of things they’d like to do, with a deadline instead of resolutions. If it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for me, so I’m giving it a shot. I have drafted my 21 things to do before I reach my 22nd birthday, which is later in the year. Here’s the five that’s most important to me...
Exhibit my designs
I want to do this outside of the upcoming school fashion show, I want to do it on my own and maybe carve my own path on my own terms. Over the past five years I have designed a lot of clothes and accessories, some have gone to family and others sold to friends. I don’t know if I should get a stall at the Saturday market or create an online look book. Any suggestions?
Go mad on my hair
The last time I did this I was in grade 11 when I relaxed my hair, dyed it blonde and then cut it spiky and short. I didn’t even join the Rihanna hair-volution. I am currently coveting Grace Jones hair. When I pluck up the courage I’ll be sure to post a pic.
Get an internship
I am in Cape Town, the home of glossies and the headquarters of the best retailers in the country. An internship in a magazine’s fashion department or working as a trainee buyer will give me knowledge I can never get out of a textbook or curriculum. My CV and cover letter have been polished and are ready to go out. Just gotta take a deep breath and hit ‘send’.
Bring Barbie to life
When I was in matric, as part of my application to fashion school I designed a collection of miniature blazers and high-waisted shorts inspired by the 1980s for my Barbie doll, I have been meaning to make them to human size but have never gotten around to it, I’d love to get a few orders for them. We all need stylish blazers! Call me.
<insert spoilt brat moment here> I want Egyptian cotton sheets I want to feel like I am sleeping inside a giant cotton ball. I owe it to my fabulous Sealy bed to dress her in the finest sheets I can afford and am actually prepared to pilfer from the designer handbag fund to do it.
So, there you have it. I’ll be working toward these and 16 other things this year, what will you be doing?
